The Kingsbridge History Society was inaugurated in 1988, the four hundredth anniversary of the Armada (1588).

Aims and Objectives of the Society (Approved at the inaugural meeting)   To seek out, document and publish information about the history of Kingsbridge, and to encourage the pursuit of that historical interest.

The idea for a Society began when Alan Saville published a history of his home, Hatch Arundell, near Churchstow.  A meeting was subsequently arranged at Tresillian, in Fore Street, Kingsbridge (the building is now part of Kingsbridge School and Community College) attended by about 20 people, following which a steering committee was set up.

It was decided that the geographical boundaries of the Society should be left unspecified so that members’ activities would not be restricted.

Full details of the inaugural and all subsequent meetings are contained in the Society’s minute books.

KHS until recently published a magazine, The Recorder.  With no editor at present production has ceased until further notice.  Back numbers are available here.
