Four long-serving KHS committee members did not seek re-election at the 2009 AGM after each independently decided the creeping years could not be ignored any longer. Unanimously the AGM expressed its wish that all four should receive a letter of thanks for their long and loyal service.
Rowena Pim, with her late husband, helped found the Society in 1988 and served as its Press Correspondent for more than five years until 2006, but still remained on the committee. A retired occupational therapist who treated wartime wounded servicemen, modest Rowena is an accomplished artist who held a solo exhibition at Harbour House in 1999. She also has a life-long love of writing.
Douglas and Olive Knight joined the Society in 1989 and say, “We have enjoyed our involvement ever since.” Douglas is a keen researcher who has contributed four articles to The Recorder: on Halwell House, South Pool (1993); Hele Family Wills (1997); Taxation in South Pool in the 18th and 19th centuries (2003); and on strained relations after a neighbour informed on a 17th century local JP (2008). He served as Librarian from 1994-2008. Olive was Programme Secretary in 1995 and 1996, while both served on the committee from 1993 to 2008.
Duncan Shuttleworth was elected to the committee in 1991 and put his professional experience and sound common sense to good use in its meetings. He also served as the Society’s treasurer from 1997-2001. He researched and published in 1995 a history of Charleton – for further details of this, click on Publications on this website.
