Stancombe - A Devon Manor
by Philippa Trahair
Published by Forever Publications, 1995. 76 pages, 17 illustrations and maps, 8 family trees.
This book reveals some fascinating facts about this ancient manor. It charts the ups and downs in the fortunes of past owners and tenants: being confiscated by the crown in the 16th century; it was where ancestors of Brigham Young (leader of the Mormon church) were tenant farmers; it was owned by Sir Henry Pollexfen (Crown Prosecutor against Monmouth’s followers) in the 17th century and was divided amongst Drake and Buller families in the 18th century.
